As mentioned in the previous post, the piece versioned by Hans Zimmer for the main theme of “True Romance”, was this “Gassenhauer” (“Street song”) by Gunild Keetman (pdf), the primary originator, along with Carl Orff, of the approach to teaching music known as Orff Schulwerk. Curiously, this precious ostinato gem was used by Terence Malick in his 1973 movie “Badlands” and is itself based on a sixteenth century composition for lute by Hans Newsidler. This performance was recorded in 1971 by “an instrumental ensemble” (sic) under the “overall direction” of Carl Orff.
